Top Considerations When Choosing a New Fleet of Trucks for Your Heavy Haulage

If you are in the business of heavy haulage, you will need to use the right vehicles for the job. Trucks are the obvious choice of vehicles for transporting heavy loads by road. But not all trucks are built the same, and it is therefore up to every potential truck buyer to find a truck that suits their needs and those of their business. There are several factors that you will need to take into account when you are choosing a truck for your heavy haulage, but some tend to be weightier than others.

Below are some of the most impactful factors you should consider before purchasing trucks for your heavy cargo transport.

Operating conditions

You need to acquire trucks that can effectively match your heavy haulage requirements, so naturally, the first thing that you should ponder over is the operating environment. What kind of loads will need to be transported? What sort of terrains will the vehicles need to traverse?  Will the vehicle need to tow trailers behind them? How many people will need to occupy the vehicles during each trip? How frequently will the vehicles be used? What should be the maximum height of the vehicles' bodies? Where will the vehicles be parked when not in use? These are all questions that will impact the layout, appearance and the performance of the trucks you will need.

If you are going to carry perishable items, you might need to go for a refrigerated truck; if you are going to need to carry more than three personnel per trip, you might have to consider going for a truck with an extended cabin; if the route your heavy haulage drivers will be taking has bridges, there must be enough headroom clearance for your vehicles to pass beneath, for example.

Maintenance requirements

If you expect to have a very busy work schedule, it means your heavy duty trucks will need to be on the road most of the time. In this case, you will need to look for low-maintenance truck models that can run reliably for longer without the need for frequent scheduled or unscheduled inspection and service. Of course, low-maintenance trucks will cost you more to purchase, but they will save money in the long run because of reduced need for maintenance service over the lifespan of the vehicles.

It should, however, be recognised that no vehicle can keep functioning properly for a long time without some sort of regular maintenance. Therefore, make sure minor things, such as change of engine oil and fuel filters, are done as required.
